A city of about 1.2 million people, the Church is very small. This is the capital of folk Islam where ancient African folk practises combine with more orthodox Islam. The famous square, Jemaa el Fna, is a gathering point for fortune tellers and psychics, witchdoctors and traditional medicine men.
